DIY Horse Manure Health Exam

Monitor your horse’s manure to check your horse’s health! Note how much manure there is usually so that any decrease in manure amount is obvious. Notice the moisture content of the stools to ensure your horse is properly hydrated and receiving enough fiber. Adjust your horse’s diet if the manure smell becomes more like sour biscuits or rotting meat. Look for any undigested grass or feed in the stool, which may be a sign of tooth or mouth problems. Keep an eye out for any parasites in the stool if your horse has not received worm medication recently. Look for a red or black color, which could indicate blood in the digestive track.
