DIY Cinder Block Hibernaculum

Provide your wild reptiles and amphibians with a winter shelter! Dig a hole in your yard several feet deep and wide, and fill the bottom of the hole with gravel for drainage. Place two cinder blocks in the center of the hole with a slight gap between the blocks, fill the gap with leaf mold and set two more cinder blocks on top with another leaf mold gap. Partially fill the hollow areas of the cinder blocks with sticks and twigs, cut PVC pipes to the length needed for a tunnel to each cinder block cubby and fill the hole with wood chips and bark. Cover the hole with wood boards or tree branches, pour a mound of topsoil over the hole and plant flowers or other vegetation on or near the hibernaculum.
