DIY Dog Paw Shake Training

Teach your dog to shake your hand! Place several treats inside a closed fist and hold the fist next to your dog’s nose. When your dog raises a paw even slightly, praise them and give them a treat. Repeat the process, waiting for your dog to raise their paw fully before praising them and rewarding them with a treat. Repeat the process again, this time holding out your open hand to grab your dog’s paw when it raises, and praising your dog with a treat when that is accomplished. Have your dog repeat that step several times, then hold the treat fist behind your back, extend your free hand and praise your dog when they complete the desired action. Finally, continue repeating that step while also saying a command, such as “Paw” or “Shake,” while reaching out your free hand to your dog.
