Driftwood Turtle Resting Bar
Make a resting place for your turtle out of driftwood! Get several pieces of driftwood from the aquarium section of a pet store. Decide how the pieces will fit together to create a platform-like area for your turtle to rest on near the surface of the water. Drill holes in the driftwood and connect the pieces with zip ties or use aquarium silicone to glue the pieces together. Use zip ties or aquarium silicone to attach the driftwood onto suction cups and attach the suction cups near the surface of the tank.

This is NOT good advice! They need to COMPLETELY exit the water and completely dry off…even underneath!!! That pic is not an acceptable setup. You cannot simply drop found wood into the tank; it must be decontaminated/sterilized to remove any parasites! Also, if the water it was drifting in is really polluted, it could leech chemicals. I’m not sure about zip ties, but I’m going to bet that leaving them to soak for months is another terrible idea…why not AQUARIUM-SAFE silicone for glue? Why risk the well-being of a pet with such a long lifespan?

Thank you for your input! You made some great points. We have updated the post to reflect that this is a resting bar, not a basking platform, and also that the wood used in this project (mopani wood) can be found in pet stores. Also, using aquarium silicone is a great idea to get as much plastic out of the tank as possible, and since the source article mentions how difficult it is to drill through mopani wood, it would probably be the easier method as well.
